I Am Not Batman

I’m not Batman analysis

In this piece, Marco Ramirez gives the audience a very good interpretation of this text by Luis Soares. It’s the story of a young poor hispanic boy, 8 to 12 years old, that dreams of being Batman because he wants to live a similar life. To interpret this piece we will use the theory of multiples intelligences of Howard Gardner. We will specifically talk about linguistic and musical intelligence because those were the ones that stood out the most to us.

To start, linguistic intelligence is used in this performance for multiple reasons, including interpretation and clarity. Ramirez’s interpretation gives us a very good picture of what the text is about, he takes us with him in this story. The beginning is all joyful and funny and as he takes us through the story his tone and expression change. He’s able to include the audience in his story with the way he reads the text. Plus, Marco Ramirez uses common language that the general public would understand to make the story relevant to everyone. Ramirez’s rhythm while speaking changes when what he says is whether relevant or not. For example, when he describes his blue polo he talks a lot faster than when he talks about his father at the end. This helps the audience understand the story and relate to the character. Briefly, the linguistic intelligence had a big impact on Marco Ramirez’s interpretation.

Also, the musical intelligence was another influence for the performance. On stage, there was a drummer making small sounds during Ramirez’s speech. The drums were used as way of adding punctuation to the piece. It also served as understanding the message that the text wanted to give to the audience. The drummer was mostly never making sounds at the same time as Ramirez because he was adding on to what he was saying. However, when the drums were playing at the same time it’s as if he was emphasizing what Marco was saying to stop suddenly to add a punch to the line. In short, the music in this performance added a new layer to the performance.
